Cool Sites for Teens

Teens and Tweens are the fastest-growing web market, according to BusinessWeek. Several new sites have arrived on the scene in the last year which are challenging TeenNick.com and Disney.com for a share of this important segment of the buying public. Listed below are a few teen sites that look to have a promising future in 2010 and beyond.
JSYK
This site, run by AOL Music, mostly covers celebrities, music, and movies. In the fall of 2009, they’ve been covering the coundtown to New Moon better than anyone, with behind-the-scenes photos and exclusive interviews (presumably made possible by AOL’s Warner Bros. connections). But the site goes beyond the usual gossip to include coverage of teen role models like Jessica Watson, currently attempting to be the youngest person to sail around the world unassisted—she’s sixteen years old.
TeenFaze
An independent site that does its share of entertainment coverage while also offering polls, contests, a small-scale social community, and blogs from its teen correspondents. In fact, the blogs are the strongest part of the site, with real-life teen “hosts” blogging about fashion, movies, sports, music, and giving advice to members who write in. We’ve e-mailed them and can guarantee that Renna, Mary, Sarah, and the other bloggers are all real people.
Social Girls
A very new site that takes a more educational approach and aims at a female teen audience. Sprinkled throughout the Hollywood coverage are fun facts about history, stories of female role models, and interesting trivia about science and nature that even teens won’t find boring. The site also features video episodes of the actual “Social Girls” — artsy Katie, smart Alexa, and athletic Taylor. New adventures of these teen cuties appear on the site every day.
Girl Zone
Another site just for teen girls. Girl Zone doesn’t shy away from provocative topics, whether it’s broken families or honest dating advice. The site also talks about body issues and encourages members to submit their creative writing. Vowing to “always listen to girls” and believing that “every girl is cool,” Girl Zone also cleverly links up with content partners such as the Girl Scouts of America, Teens Turning Green, and the Women’s Sports Foundation. The site is also partnered with two yoga companies, perceptively anticipating the growth in this niche market.
myYearbook
Started by a teen brother and his teen sister, this site still manages to stay independent as it attracts huge press coverage and advertising dollars. Last year, it surpassed both Wikipedia and Amazon to become the 14th-most popular website. The site is mostly a social network where can teens can find friends and form romantic relationships, but it also offers social games like Owned and Battles, and allows users to accumulate points through site use. These points, called “Lunch Money,” can be donated to a number of charities which have partnered with myYearbook. Though not often compared to Facebook and MySpace, myYearbook could very well overtake one of these social networks in 2010.

WonderGlen brings new kind of comedy to the internet

Ever watch The Office and wish you could read Dwight’s emails? Or see Michael’s PowerPoint presentations in all their glory? Or see what Jim is IMing to Pam?
A new comedy website takes the satire of that show and adds the subtlety and awkwardness of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and British programs like I’m Alan Partridge, and combines them into the funniest online experience I’ve ever had.
I’ve been posting the videos without even knowing it was part of a larger campaign. I found them on YouTube and thought they were funny. The whole site is even funnier.
The site is supposed to be the intranet (internal company internet) for WonderGlen Productions, a company that makes reality shows. Except that all their shows are ludicrously awful, like the home makeover show that turns the houses of unwilling contestants into tiny wooden Hobbit dwellings from Lord of the Rings. You can watch videos of their auditions, rehearsals, and final “sizzle reels,” most of which are pretty damn funny.
But the real fun is in the bulletin board, where the five employees argue about whether the office should be closed on Columbus Day to what kind of health insurance they should get (and yes, even the health care form is funny). They have their own personal squabbles and think of more terrible reality TV ideas. You get an interesting window into their ridiculous lives.
This story is unfolding on the internet without the knowledge of the characters; anyone, like you or me, who visits the site is “hacking” in, so the employees don’t know that we can see all their posts and videos. Thus, there are no credits on the site and it’s anybody’s guess who’s behind it. The fact that James Franco is in one of their videos points to a major studio, and the whole project may be viral marketing for a summer movie.
Either way, it’s funny and unlike anything else on the web. Check it out at www.wonderglen.com, and if you figure out who’s writing it, let us know.

What television shows would you consider to feature liberal issues, and what shows conservative issues?
I have an essay questions that says:
Write an essay in which you discuss the representation of liberal and conservative issues in television shows.
I am wondering everyone's opinion so I can get a good slate of examples to argue with.
I would think that the shows would be the newscasts, and programming on Fox (Conservative) and CNN (Liberal.

What is an internet relationship and why do get close to internet relation much faster than in real?
What is an internet friendship? How close can we go with an opposite sex having internet friendship? What is the difference of dating in real person and internet dating? Why do we feel close with internet friends more than anything else and feel like meeting him / her again and again in person?
I think people move in relationships faster online because there is no fear of not being able to say what you actually feel, and you are able to openly express yourself.
Also so many people change themselves online to have a personality that you would like, and those people find out little things about you and incorporate it into who they "are" to make you like them more.
And the fact that you can either lie about your personality is scary, because what if you do meet the person? And then you may never know who you can trust and may not meet real friendly people.
My advise is that less people should indulge on online RELATIONSHIPS and stick with FRIENDSHIP.
have a fantastic day and watch out for online predators !

Buying a direct tv receiver box and card from ebay, will it work at home?
I already have direct tv at my house but only for one TV and I would like to have another box so i my wife can watch it in another room. I found some on ebay with a access card and was thinking about buying it but will direct tv charge me extra monthly? Do I need to tell them I bought new receivers so they could activate it?
you can, but you need to be aware of a few things.
first of all, used satellite receivers often have "balances" attached to them, meaning that the former user didn't pay everything that they owed. if the receiver is to be used again, even though it's on another person's account, the balance still needs to be paid. i would contact the seller on ebay and make sure that there is no balance. you can also get the receiver ID# and card ID# from the seller and contact DirecTV to find out about the balance yourself. if they say that there's no balance, then you're good to go.
second, unfortunately directv WILL charge you an extra $5 a month for having a second receiver on your account. most people mistakenly believe that this is a "monthly rental fee" for the box. that is, however, incorrect. the fee applies to any additional receiver after the first, no matter whether you purchased the receiver outright (ie. ebay), or leased it from DirecTV (basically a loaner).
i would honestly suggest that you just switch to Dish Network, if possible. since you would be considered a new customer, you get all of the cool stuff for free. free 2-room DVR, free installation, free cinemax for a year, and three months free. you would have to sign a 2 year contract, but that's pretty normal. anywho, i only mention this to you so that you can make an educated decision.

What are some movies about homosexuality?
I saw this one movie on Life time about a closeted father and I find the concept to be very good for a movie. Does anyone know of any more movies like this besides brokeback mountain?
